General Education

At Bay Ridge College, a team of innovative and caring faculty will teach subjects in real-world contexts, using real-life examples to make content rigorous and relevant. In order to improve student learning, all courses will be taught in an interdisciplinary, problem-based fashion. In other words, instead of teaching courses as independent, fragmented learning blocks, Bay Ridge faculty will work in teams to help students develop skills and aptitudes by integrating learning across discipline lines. Bay Ridge students will learn to see and make connections among learning, rather than to see learning as divided knowledge.

Our General Education Program will use "Cognitive Restructuring" and "Transformational Teaching and Learning" to help students develop the skills, abilities, and habits of mind needed to support lifelong learning, growth, confidence, and faith. Bay Ridge will offer a comprehensive program of courses designed to fulfill the 60 credit- hour requirement for the Associate of Arts Degree.

The ability-based curricula will provide each of our student scholars the critical knowledge, learning, and analytic skills necessary to further both education and careers. Specifically, the academic programs will lead to the completion of 30 hours of General Education requirements in the areas of Humanities and Fine Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics. They will also include courses to develop skills in written and oral communication and basic computer skills. Additionally, 30 hours of coursework will be offered toward electives and Certificates in Career Studies.

Among our expectations, Bay Ridge graduates will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in research-based writing.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in science.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technology use.
